AL KHASHABA OF MIOMusic for peaceالخشابة الكندية
The Khashaba Band, a distinguished ensemble within the Maqamat International Orchestra (MIO), has been instrumental in bringing the rich traditions of Arabic music to audiences in Mississauga, Canada. Under the leadership of Anwar Abudragh—an Iraqi singer, composer, and master of the Joza (a traditional Iraqi instrument)—the band specializes in the Iraqi Maqam, a classical Arabic musical genre that dates back to the Abbasid era (8th–13th century). maqamat.academy
In November 2022, the Khashaba Band played a pivotal role in the presentation of “Iraqi Maqam: A New Vision” at Massey Hall in Toronto. This event featured renowned oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma and was part of a global initiative to rejuvenate the Iraqi Maqam by introducing new lyrics, compositions, and singing styles, while preserving its classical roots. The performance was a collaborative effort between MIO and the Maqamat International Academy of Arts and Heritage (MIAAH), marking the debut of this innovative vision in North America.
Based in Mississauga, MIAAH is dedicated to revitalizing traditional art forms from around the world and celebrating contemporary arts. The academy offers educational and technical training in various international artistic disciplines, aiming to deepen public appreciation for art rooted in cultural heritage. Through performances like those of the Khashaba Band, MIAAH fosters cultural exchange and understanding between Canada and the Arab world. maqamat.academy
